"I [We] can do all things through Christ who strengthens me [us]"
JGs Preliminary Round 1. SN said: Bring it On! and so it went.
Proposition: UWC, Opposition, Us
Without going too much in the mechanics of the debate, I'll just mention a few things :)
- UWC had good style -> calm, confident; and most importantly a good case setup which did not make us raise our eyebrows (which happens a lot of the time, trust me). I however disagreed with their content haha.
- Shirley had a sudden fiery outburst towards a POI. But a judge liked it - FIERCE!
- Marthadramamama. (Also known as the Singapore Bullet Train.)
- Alison best speaker!
We won the debate :)
Everyone felt it was a really well deserved win. Thank you God, for blessing the speakers with the ability and courage to speak passionately and with conviction. Thank you God, for granting us something that we have worked so hard to earn, and have deserved. Thank you God, for that defining moment.
I literally broke down. There was just something inside me that started the flow of tears - it started, and then all of a sudden it wouldn't stop. It felt like a breakthrough - THE breakthrough. Emotionsoverwhelmedatonego. But thank you to everyone who calmed me down and petted me like a strange animal to be wary of (indeed).
I was very honoured to have met Mr Gaurav :) I have heard all about him of course, and have heard his eloquent style of speaking. But the fact that he adjudicated the debate, debriefed us (even speaker by speaker) and ranked it a four-and-a-half-star-upon-five performance on the whole just made me awestruck haha. He is really wise, and xuwen extended some of his comments in telling us how to improve as well. Of course the other adjudicators were great - this nice guy who assured the speakers that they did well and will do well. Really glad they chose a more equal weightage - style, content, structure to judge the debate so its fair and a definite win.
Also, no words can express our gratefulness to Claire. Through good times and bad times, she has always stuck with SN debate team. Even in TJ she is missing us like crazy! And today she herself cooked a sumptous meal for us, talked to us over dinner etc. Really encouraging, supportive, motivates us all the time :) Makes us wanna do well. Jolly came too haha :D support level was really high today, what with Magdalene (heart!) giving us flowers and a heartfelt note of encouragement. I'm really touched that she did that for me too! though I don't really "know" her well haha. And Swee en & Our Adorable Juniors gave us very beautiful flowers :) Martha's two friends Vic and Stacy went too, and it felt nice knowing that some people (esp in busybusybee triple science!) would come down and support their friends in competitions haha. Basically there's a lot of people to thank sincerely.
Amelia, thanks for sharing your views with me haha :D I think i'm over-opinionated at times haha. Glad the debate sailed by in near-perfection.
Xuwen, thank you so much for your guidance and confidence in us. You, and even Mr Searl and Ms Fazi, have never stopped believing in us. And today's triumph is not singular, but shared with all and by all :)
Still, we must not be complacent - that I reminded myself frequently today. God has recognised our potential and rewarded us, and we must continue to strive - especially if it is my turn to be speaking next! Must have confidence in Him and my abilities. Happy now, but celebrations later :) WE CAN DO IT.
Valentine's Day is around the corner! And what better way to begin by shouting out to the most beloved of posse(s)' - DEBATE TEAM (EVERYONE) I LOVE YOU MORE THAN TWENTY, STAY BEAUTIFUL CAUSE YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MY VALENTINE ;)
Keep the faith.
